Breast Augmentation:
A More Natural Look

Through ongoing studies, plastic surgeons are continually improving the techniques for implant placement, preventing many of the initial problems seen with implants, making breast augmentation a safer and more predictable procedure.

During an initial consultation, patients can expect Dr. Kimberly Short to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various implants with respect to surface texturing, implant shapes, size and placement above or below the chest muscles. She will thoroughly explain all procedures and take a number of measurements to determine the appropriate implant size and shape to best fit the patient's body frame and expectations. There are three options for placement of the incision - around the nipple, under the breast and under the arm. Dr. Short will cover these as well as the use of the endoscope, a tiny camera which can be used to limit the size of the incision.

Every surgery is individualized to best fit each patient's specific needs. Dr. Short will discuss precautions that a patient can take to maintain softness of the implants and review the post-operative recovery. Most patients will need seven to ten days to return to normal activity. Sutures are removed the first week and patients are taught several techniques to facilitate healing.

During the actual surgery, Dr. Short finds the right implant by placing "sizers" first. She raises the head of the bed to place the patient in an upright sitting position. This allows her to see exactly how the implants will lie. The appearance of the implants in the upright position may be very different from the appearance when the patient is lying down. This must be carefully assessed at the time of surgery to obtain the best result. If you are considering breast augmentation, it is important to remember the many decisions that need to be made regarding this procedure. Before you make a final decision, gather all the valuable information that is made available to the public.
