Welcome

Planning the Surgery:

Time off Work:

You should plan to be off work for 5-7 days.  If you combine liposuction to the abdomen with other areas of liposuction, then you should plan for 7-10 days.

Caregiver:

You will need a caregiver for the first 24-36 hours post-operatively.  If you do not have someone to care for you, a nurse can be provided for a fee.

The Day of Surgery:

Small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through very short incisions placed in inconspicuous locations near the fat deposits, and excess fat is removed. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.  The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours.

After Surgery:
  • You will go home with a compression garment and topifoam compression pads covering the treated areas.  Compression is advised for six weeks as it helps reduce swelling and helps you achieve the final result more quickly. Once pain and soreness decrease, it is frequently more comfortable to wear lycra or spandex exercise pants.
  • Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication.
  • Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final result takes shape over 3-4 months.

    Note:

It is important to address any concerns with Dr. Short at the time of your consultation.  There is some risk, as with any surgical procedure.  To prevent post-operative complications with this technique, no smoking is a requirement prior to surgery. Dr. Short can explain the procedure and potential complications to you in detail, and she can assist you in determining if liposuction is right for you.
