Welcome

Planning the Surgery:

Time off Work:

You should plan to be off work or school for at 5-7 days after the procedure.

Caretaker:

Someone must be available to take care of you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Day of Surgery:

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and depending on the age of the patient and preference, either a general anesthesia or twilight anesthesia with sedation can be administered.  The procedure typically takes 2 hours.

After Surgery:

To promote the best molding of your ears to your head and healing, you usually return home with a bulky head dressing following surgery.  Any initial discomfort can be relieved by oral medications.  The bandages will be replaced within a couple days by a garment similar to a headband that will provide the necessary compression.

Note:

It is important to address any concerns with Dr. Short at the time of your consultation.  There is some risk, as with any surgical procedure.  Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally.  Major complications are unusual.  Dr. Short can explain the procedure and potential complications to you in detail, and she can assist you in determining if otoplasty is right for you.
