Dr. Short's Philosophy

My goal for nose contouring or rhinoplasty is to produce a nose that appears natural, functions properly, and is in balance and harmony with the rest of the face.  The "operated look" is one that should be avoided.  The patient's wishes in regard to the type of nose desired are always considered, but there are limiting factors.  Skin texture and thickness, previous injury, individual variations in healing, and facial proportions and contour plays an important play in what can and should be achieved.  All of this will be discussed with you during the consultation.

When should I consider nose surgery?
  • An abnormal appearance to the nose as a result of trauma, accident or disease, breathing problems
  • A nose which is cosmetically unattractive or lacks a pleasing proportion in relationship to other facial features

Anticipated Results:
  • For reconstructive problems, improvement in one's breathing capacity through both nostrils
  • For cosmetic problems, a more attractive profile in which the nose is in better proportion to the other facial features

A small incision is made of the column of skin between the nostrils on the underneath surface of the nose.  This incision usually heals very well and is not visible at conversational distances.  If the base of the nose is too wide, making incisions in the creases on both sides where the nostril and cheek join narrows it.  The resulting scars are hidden in the creases.  Dr. Short prefers to utilize an open technique with the rhinoplasty procedure to gain better exposure of the anatomy.

Rhinoplasty Examples:

These patients had the rhinoplasty procedure performed to improve the dorsal hump and decrease the bulbous tip of the nose.  The patients pictured below were taken before and approximately one year after surgery.

Planning the Surgery:

Time off Work:

You should usually try to take off work at least 7-10 days after the surgery to allow for optimal healing.  The nasal splint is typically worn for 5-7 days after surgery.

Caretaker:

You will need to have someone to take care of you for at least the first 24-36 hours after the procedure.

The Day of Surgery:

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.  The procedure typically takes 2.5-3.5 hours.

After Surgery:

You will go home with a nasal splint which will be worn for the first 5-7 days.  The nasal splint will be removed in the office.  There will also be nasal packing placed in the nostrils for the first 24 hours.  The nasal packing will be removed in the office the day after surgery.  The pain is minimal and is controlled with mild pain medication.  Glasses should not rest on the nose for 6 weeks after surgery.

Note:

It is important to address any concerns with Dr. Short at the time of your consultation.  There is some risk, as with any surgical procedure.  To prevent post-operative complications with this technique, no smoking is a requirement prior to surgery. Dr. Short can explain the procedure and potential complications to you in detail, and she can assist you in determining if a rhinoplasty is right for you.
