What is CoolSculpting?
People are always searching for fast ways to get rid of unwanted fat, whether to lose weight or to reconfigure their body image to their satisfaction. When dieting and exercise are not as effective or as quick to provide the desired results, patients often come to Dr. Short for surgical solutions such as liposuction and other treatments to eliminate fat—even if temporarily. However, these procedures often require invasive operations that can leave scarring, introduce health risks, and require long, sometimes painful recovery periods before normal life can be resumed.
CoolSculpting is a cutting-edge fat removal process that is non-surgical and noninvasive. It is especially helpful in targeting areas of stubborn fat, such as in the belly or thigh regions. At the same time, it minimizes downtime and discomfort, allowing patients to enjoy the benefits of fat loss without disrupting their lives.
CoolSculpting is the only FDA-approved cosmetic procedure to use controlled cooling to kill off fat cells and provide results that last for years.
The Science Behind CoolSculpting
There are many dieting and body-shaping fads that come and go every year that have little—if nonexistent—scientific evidence to back up their effectiveness. Some are even proven to be harmful when put through clinical studies, so it’s wise to ensure any procedure you undergo to improve your body image is founded on proven principles. Dr. Short does not offer any procedure that hasn’t been certified as an effective way to achieve the self-image you desire, and CoolSculpting is no exception.
The science of CoolSculpting is relatively simple.
Scientists at Harvard University discovered that children who eat popsicles on a more regular basis would experience a dimpling effect in their cheeks. This was because fat cells freeze and die at higher temperatures than other cells throughout the body. Thus, pockets of fat cells exposed to a targeted cooling would shrink and be permanently eliminated. This cooling process, called cryolipolysis, was patented and turned into CoolSculpting. By applying CoolSculpting to regions of fat cells, they can be chilled to the point of being frozen and killed while keeping all the surrounding tissue healthy. These dead fat cells are then eliminated naturally from the body, and a single treatment of CoolSculpting has been shown to reduce fat deposit sizes by 40%!
Combined with ongoing healthy activity and nutrition, these fat reductions can be sustained for years, keeping you slim and trim, just the way you like it.
CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction
CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction method that uses spot-targeted cooling application to kill off fat cells, which are then naturally removed from the body. It does not require any anesthetics, pain medications, downtime, or recovery, nor is there any potential for scarring as no incisions are made during the procedure.
Alternatively, liposuction is based on surgery, where incisions are made (which have the potential for scarring, though this is often minimized when done with an excellent physician such as Dr. Short) and tubes are used to suck the fat out from the underlying tissue. This can require weeks of recovery, and there is usually some level of pain, bruising, and swelling that occurs. Liposuction also tends to be more costly, but it can provide more immediately visible results, whereas CoolSculpting can take weeks or months before major results are noticeable.
CoolSculpting treats fat deposits in numerous areas around the body.
Since it is such a safe procedure, CoolSculpting can address fat in particularly stubborn body regions that can take years to reduce through exercise and dieting alone. Our bodies are simply made to preserve fat cells as much as possible in some places, but CoolSculpting can circumvent our genetic predispositions to get rid of that fat fast, without extra time or stress. Most patients will look to have CoolSculpting performed on areas such as the stomach and general abdomen, hips, lower back, buttocks, thighs, upper back, chest, and under the neck.
Do you have unwanted fat in certain areas of your body, such as your hips, thighs, or stomach, and no matter how much you diet and how much you run or hit the gym, that extra weight refuses to budge? Then you may be a prime candidate for CoolSculpting. We call certain fat deposits “stubborn fat” for a reason—meaning that it is the last place your body goes to for burn calories, even when you’re trying hard to shed the pounds.
CoolSculpting accelerates this process and actually targets the unwanted fat for you.
Any patient who has enough extra weight and is not dealing with any significant health complication should be able to undergo CoolSculpting therapy. Since it is not a surgical procedure, factors such as anesthetic allergies and pain medication conflicts are not an issue. Ideal candidates will also try to establish and maintain a healthy level of activity and good nutritional approaches in order to maintain their fat loss after the procedure.
As with all of her cosmetic procedures, Dr. Short requires every patient to have a mandatory pre-procedure meeting to go over the treatment, their personal goals, and other factors surrounding the therapy. She will review your health history, past injuries, and surgeries, and discuss the specific reasons why you are pursuing CoolSculpting as a fat reduction option. Your goals and expectations will be reviewed so they can be realistic going into the treatment, and Dr. Short will certainly answer any and all questions you have concerning the process. You may wish to prepare questions ahead of time, such as:
- Will the process be painful?
- When will I be able to return to my normal routine?
- How long do the results last?
- What can I do to maintain the results for as long as possible?
- Will I need multiple treatments?
The CoolSculpting Treatment
Without surgery, CoolSculpting is a simple and streamlined process that places minimal effort or stress on you as the patient. You don’t need to follow any complicated pre-procedure preparation, such as fasting or lab testing. When the day of your treatment arrives, you will have a gel pad and applicator set on the targeted area(s). Cryolipolysis will be induced through this, during which time you can entertain yourself with reading, games, movies, or simply take a nap until it’s over.
Feelings of intense cold usually dissipate within five to ten minutes.
There may be some points during the procedure where the chilliness of the applicator is uncomfortable. The applicator also provides a level of suction that draws fat cells closer to the surface of the skin, so they are exposed more to the cold and more easily killed off. This can cause feelings of pinching or tugging, but these are often mild.
Without any surgical methods involved, patients who undergo CoolSculpting can return to their daily routines without interruption. There is no recovery time required to allow incisions to heal, and no pain medications that would prevent work from being done. Often, patients will schedule a CoolSculpting session during their work day and return to the office immediately after completing it.
Some patients may experience redness in the treated areas, which can be helped with some light walking and massage.
Since the body needs time to eliminate the frozen fat cells, the results may not be immediately visible and can take two to three weeks to begin appearing. Within a couple of months, the majority of the results will be apparent, with it being complete within four to six months. Results can be extended by sticking to a healthy level of activity and dieting to avoid regaining the fat cells, either in the treated areas or in other places around the body that are vulnerable to fat deposits. It is possible to undergo this treatment multiple times, either targeting different areas in each session or going every few years to have deposits reduced in the same spot to maintain original results.
Immediately after the procedure, some patients do experience irritation, redness, or numbness in the affected areas. However, this fades quickly. Be sure to contact the clinic should you have any questions or concerns about your recovery following a CoolSculpting therapy.
Most cosmetic procedural costs will range from a few hundred dollars to thousands depending on the chosen clinic, physician, whether surgery is involved or not, and the extent of the work being done to achieve the patient’s image goals.
Dr. Short will help create a personalized treatment plan and will cover this during your mandatory consultation, so you understand just how much the procedure will cost.
