Skin rejuvenation and resurfacing can be achieved in a number of ways, ranging from laser, light and other energy-based treatments to chemical peels and other non-ablative methods. A chemical peel involves the application of an acid solution to the face to cause the top layers of old skin to slough off, revealing fresh, new skin. Light, moderate, and deep peels are available, varying in the strength of the acid solution. Our certified skin care specialists can also perform microdermabrasion to the skin as well in combination with a skin peel to increase penetration of the chemical peel, increasing post-operative results.
Typically, the light peels are performed by our certified skin care specialists. Microdermabrasion is when small particles are used to rub away the top layer of damaged skin. The particles and dead skin cells are then cleaned away with a suction device. This combination performed by our skin care specialists can be performed in the office within 45-60 minutes with little to no downtime based on your expectations. Dr. Short will perform the deeper chemical peels (20% or 30%). Dr. Short uses an acid termed trichloracetic acid or TCA). The degree of response to TCA peeling varies with each person.

Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Erbium laser resurfacing allows Dr. Short to specifically treat a deeper layer of skin by vaporizing superficial damaged skin cells and allowing the remaining collagen to become thicker and healthier.
The Erbium laser limits the amount of heat absorbed by the skin and is very precise with superficial skin removal. As a result, wrinkles, scar, and hyper-pigmentation will be removed and skin contraction will occur.

Preparation of the skin before peeling is critical to the success of the procedure. The skin is conditioned by applying Retin-A and hydroquinone for 4 to 6 weeks prior to peeling. Dr. Short recommends using her own formulation or Retin-A to obtain the best results called PSBM cream. PSBM Cream contains the following formulation: .05% Retin-A, 5% Hydroquinone, and 0.5% Hydrocortisone cream. This special combination of agents will exfoliate the skin and prepare the skin surface for a resurfacing procedure. You should apply this cream evenly over the entire area that is to be peeled at least once a day. Dr. Short also recommends one to two skin care treatments prior to the Erbium laser resurfacing procedure to maximize the results after the procedure.
The treatment is performed under IV sedation or twilight anesthesia. The treatment generally takes 1-2 hours depending on the depth and the number of passes required for optimal treatment success. The clinical staff will apply dressings or Aquaphor to the treated after the procedure depending on the depth of the laser treatment. Any minor discomfort will be over by the time you are discharged.
You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home from the office. A caregiver will be needed for the first 3-5 days to assist in driving, ambulation, dressing changes, and cleansings. Healing should be complete in 5 to 7 days for a mild depth, 7-10 days for a moderate depth, and 10-14 days for a deep depth laser resurfacing. Skin care products will be provided after the laser resurfacing treatment along with special instruction.
Absolute sun protection is essential for the first year after any resurfacing treatment to prevent irregular pigmentation and maintain your new, younger, smoother skin. Always wear sunscreen.
