When time starts to soften those sharp contours of years past and skin begins to sag, Ultherapy Prime offers a rejuvenating, nonsurgical solution that provides effortlessly natural-looking results.

At The Gillian Institute of Indianapolis, we’re excited to offer our patients Ultherapy Prime, a leading-edge advancement in noninvasive skin lifting and tightening. Dr. Kimberly Short and our experienced team use this FDA-cleared treatment to lift and tighten the skin for a taut, youthful look that enhances your natural features.

What Is Ultherapy Prime®?

Ultherapy Prime is a next-generation ultrasound treatment system for facial rejuvenation. This anti-aging solution uses focused ultrasound energy to activate vital healing processes that lift and tighten the skin over time.

Unlike other noninvasive therapies that primarily focus on the surface of the skin, Ultherapy Prime stimulates deep healing in foundational layers of skin where aging truly begins. This treatment targets the same tissue depths that plastic surgeons work with when performing surgical facelifts, but without the incisions or longer recovery time.

How Does Ultherapy Prime® Work?

This energy-based treatment uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) technology to deliver energy to targeted tissues with extreme precision. Similar to having an ultrasound done during pregnancy, the visualization component of Ultherapy Prime allows Dr. Short to assess the layers of tissue beneath your skin in real time.

Once the treatment areas are identified, Ultherapy Prime applies carefully calibrated ultrasound energy to the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which is located just over four millimeters beneath the skin’s surface. As the energy is applied to the targeted area, it causes multiple tiny injuries that prompt your body to respond by producing collagen and elastin. These vital healing factors then go to work tightening and rejuvenating the skin.

Because Ultherapy Prime relies on your body’s built-in regenerative capacity, it produces seamlessly natural-looking and long-lasting results. The newly laid-down collagen fibers mature in the months following your treatment session(s), allowing for continual improvement.

What Does Ultherapy Prime® Treat?

Ultherapy Prime is used to address a wide range of common aesthetic concerns affecting the face and neck, including the following:

Facial Aging Concerns:

  • Skin laxity of the cheeks, jawline and jowls
  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Undefined facial contours

Neck and Décolletage Concerns:

  • Horizontal neck banding
  • Fine lines and crepiness of the chest
  • Skin laxity (turkey neck)
  • Reduced firmness of the upper chest

Who Is Ultherapy Prime® For?

While most people who are generally in good health and looking for a noninvasive face and neck rejuvenation treatment will be candidates for Ultherapy Prime, there are several key criteria that must be considered before moving forward with the treatment. Dr. Short will carefully assess your physical presentation, health history and expectations of treatment, among other factors, in an initial consultation to determine your candidacy for Ultherapy Prime.

Aesthetic Concerns

While Ultherapy Prime is an effective option for patients looking to remedy the above aesthetic concerns, including skin laxity, fine lines and loss of facial contours, it does not resolve significant fat deposits, deeper wrinkles or severe acne.

If you present to treatment with more advanced skin concerns, you may be recommended an alternative approach or one that combines Ultherapy Prime with complementary treatments to deliver the results you’re looking for.

Health Status

Ultherapy Prime should not be used in the following instances:

  • On pregnant or nursing women
  • Around active infections or open wounds
  • On patients with pacemakers or defibrillators near the treatment area
  • On patients with certain skin or immune conditions
  • On patients with severe skin laxity

The ideal Ultherapy Prime patient is between 30 and 65 years of age. Patients with lower collagen reserves may be better suited for alternative treatments, as Ultherapy Prime will not stimulate a potent enough response to allow for noticeable results in this case.

Expectations and Commitment to the Treatment Plan

The ideal Ultherapy Prime patient understands two key aspects relating to the onset and extent of their results.

First, because this treatment relies on collagen to tighten and rejuvenate the skin, it typically takes two to three months for results to gradually reach their peak.

Second, Ultherapy Prime is not a one-to-one replacement for surgical rejuvenation procedures. While it can access deeper tissues and address many of the same issues as a neck lift with chin contouring, Ultherapy Prime will not provide as dramatic a transformation or treat more advanced aesthetic concerns.

Ultherapy Prime® vs. Ultherapy®: What’s the Difference?

While both Ultherapy Prime and its predecessor, Ultherapy, use focused ultrasound, the newer treatment carries several advantages over the older. For example, the Prime version comes with enhanced imaging capabilities that allow for more detailed visualization of multiple tissue layers. This allows for greater precision when determining where to apply the ultrasound energy for optimal benefits.

The Prime system also features improved transducer technology that allows it to more efficiently and evenly deliver and distribute energy. This allows for a more comfortable treatment experience, all while delivering comparable or improved results. Finally, the Prime version can be more finely calibrated to accommodate anatomical and other differences from one patient to another for a more targeted treatment.

How to Prepare for Ultherapy Prime® Treatment

As part of the treatment process, Dr. Short will provide you with personalized pre-treatment instructions. Make sure to follow all instructions, as they are meant to enhance results and promote safety.

Generally, patients are recommended to take the following steps in the weeks leading up to Ultherapy Prime treatment:

Several Weeks Before Treatment:

  • Discontinue or avoid blood-thinning medications and any other medications as advised
  • Discontinue use of retinoids and other more aggressive skincare products as advised
  • Minimize sun exposure as much as possible, including tanning appointments
  • Maintain optimal hydration and a balanced diet

One Week Before Treatment:

  • Do not undergo any facial rejuvenation treatments, including chemical peels and laser treatments
  • Avoid waxing or using depilatory creams on or around the treatment area
  • Inform Dr. Short of any relevant status changes, including cold sores and infections

Day of Treatment:

  • Arrive at treatment with clean, makeup-free skin
  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewelry around the neck or ears
  • If you’ve taken pain medication, arrange transportation home

What to Expect During Your Ultherapy Prime® Procedure

The Ultherapy Prime treatment process is comfortable and typically takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Our first step is cleaning and preparing your skin for treatment. Ultrasound gel is applied to improve the device’s contact with the skin. Your provider then moves the Ultherapy Prime handpiece across the treatment area to deliver focused energy according to pre-established parameters (like tissue depth). Most patients report a warming sensation and little to no discomfort.

As the treatment is carried out, real-time monitoring allows us to assess the tissue’s response and make any necessary adjustments. Once the procedure has ended, any residual ultrasound gel is removed, and you are cleared to resume your regular schedule.

Ultherapy Prime® Recovery and Aftercare

As one of the most discreet nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments on the market, Ultherapy Prime is preferred by many for its minimal downtime and simple recovery process. However, you should still expect to encounter some routine post-treatment effects. As the days progress, acute post-treatment effects like swelling will continue to subside while your results continue to improve.

Here is what you can expect from the Ultherapy Prime recovery process:

Immediately After Treatment:

  • Mild redness, swelling and tenderness
  • You will likely be cleared to resume your work schedule immediately
  • Gentle moisturizers and sunscreen may be advised

First Two Weeks After Treatment:

  • Swelling is mostly or fully resolved by the end of the second week
  • The treated area may be slightly firm
  • Your normal skincare routine may be resumed as tolerated
  • Sunscreen is still advised to protect the skin

Two to Three Months After Treatment:

  • Resolution of swelling and ongoing collagen activity reveal continually improving results
  • Skin is tightened and lifted
  • Skin texture and quality improvements are visible

How Long Does It Take to See Results From Ultherapy Prime®?

Some patients report a near-immediate lifting effect following Ultherapy Prime, but this is credited to a heating effect applied to existing collagen fibers. Typically, results first become visible towards the end of the first month.

Once you progress past the six-week mark, you should notice continual improvements for up to a total of six months while the collagen continues to strengthen and remodel the tissue.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Individual factors such as age, skin quality (especially collagen and elastin reserves), lifestyle and genetics can affect the longevity of your Ultherapy Prime results. To provide an approximate range, most patients enjoy their results for 12 to 18 months or longer.

Protecting your skin from sun exposure, avoiding smoking and alcohol, maintaining an effective skincare routine, and reporting back for maintenance treatments can significantly prolong the duration of your results.

How Much Does Ultherapy Prime® Cost?

Several factors can impact how much you can expect to be charged for Ultherapy Prime treatment, including the following:

  • Number of treatment sessions
  • Size, complexity and number of treatment areas
  • Complementary treatments
  • Provider fees

As Ultherapy Prime is classified as an elective cosmetic procedure, it is rarely covered by insurance policies. After consulting with Dr. Short and formulating a personalized treatment plan, you will have a much clearer picture of your Ultherapy Prime pricing.

Can Ultherapy Prime® Be Combined With Other Aesthetic Procedures?

Yes, Ultherapy Prime can be paired with various procedures to compound and/or broaden its benefits.

Injectable treatments, for example, including Botox and dermal fillers, can neatly complement the effects of Ultherapy Prime when properly implemented into a combined approach. While Ultherapy Prime lifts and tightens the skin, injectables pinpoint and smooth over fine lines or volume loss.

Laser treatments are also popularly paired with Ultherapy Prime for enhanced results. Laser resurfacing treatments target sun damage and pigmentation issues along with acne scars and oversized pores to provide a more even-toned and cohesive aesthetic.
