What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Gillian Institute’s body contouring and reshaping philosophy are based on maintaining the feminine contours of the body. Our surgeons can achieve natural, feminine contours of the buttock, referred to as the “Brazilian Buttock” by re-creating the optimal silhouette. We can perform a more traditional buttock lift procedure to remove excess skin of the buttock and hip area while repositioning the tissue underneath the buttocks to create a more shapely, lifted buttock area, and also perform buttock sculpting by performing buttock augmentation and reshaping by using fat grafting to the buttocks. During an initial consultation, Dr. Short will be able to recommend the best buttock enhancing procedure based on the patient’s needs and aesthetic goals. Dr. Kimberly Short is one of the pioneering physicians of the Brazilian Butt Lift. Her experience is unparalleled, and her expertise is expansive. Surgeons can harvest fat by performing liposuction to areas on the body and transferring the fat to the buttocks to give a more lifted and more shapely appearance. Fat grafting to the buttocks will decrease fullness to the waistline and place emphasis on a narrow waist and increased curves and rounded shape to the buttocks. Fat grafting can also address mild skin laxity and sagging by restoring volume to the buttock region for improved shape with a tighter skin envelope. The Gillian Institute can also perform a variety of both approaches and techniques if needed for optimal buttock contouring.

Candidates

Individuals who desire a fuller butt and curvier figure, and have ample fatty deposits in other areas of the body, are ideally suited for the Brazilian Butt Lift. Traditional butt lift techniques are great for addressing sagging of the buttocks. Injectable butt lifts are good options for those who want a fuller figure but don’t have enough extra fat tissue. It’s also recommended that patients considering a buttock augmentation or lift of any kind be in a place in life where they can stay off their buttocks and not sit during the initial stages of their recovery. Patients with diabetes also may not be good candidates as fat grafts have a lower chance of success in diabetics. Feeling like you could use a little extra size and lift of your backside? The Brazilian Butt Lift is the procedure for you. On the other hand, if you’re concern is excessive sagging skin or too much size on the backside, you may be better served with a traditional butt lift or buttock sculpting.

When Should I Consider a Brazillian Butt Lift or Buttock Sculpting?

Buttock Lifts are for those who experience:

  • Loss of skin elasticity of the hip and buttock area.
  • Excess, loose skin to the buttocks and hip area; typically resulting from significant weight loss.
  • Significant sagging skin to the buttock creases.

A Brazilian Butt Lift for those who experience:

  • Loss of buttock shape and volume, resulting in a flatter, square shaped buttock.
  • Loss of curves to the buttock region; posterior region.
  • Desire an increase in volume, curvature, and shape to their figure

Both the Brazilian Butt Lift and modern buttock sculpting techniques are ideal for fulfilling a number of aesthetic goals and are often yield much better, natural results compared to traditional buttock implants.

Combination techniques that employ a butt lift and fat graft are available as well. The Butt Lift with fat graft can address sagging and excessive skin. Combined with fat transfer, the procedure results in a raised, youthful appearance and improved shape.

Brazilian Butt Lift Techniques

Depending on the needs of the patient, Dr. Short may recommend a butt lift, butt augmentation, or a combination of both to provide the desired results. Commonly, she performs both the augmentation and lift together for a comprehensive buttock enhancing surgery. The traditional procedure that Dr. Short performs is detailed below.

TRADITIONAL APPROACH

For a more traditional approach to a buttock lift procedure, the incision is located in the lower back region which is easily concealed with clothes or a swimsuit. This is a more common approach for weight loss patients, who have lost 100 lbs or more and are experiencing a high degree of excess skin laxity, stretch marks, and overhanging, loose skin. This approach will tighten the waistline and address excess skin and stretch marks to the lower back and buttock crease area. The lower back and buttock skin, as well as the tissues, are tightened, resulting in a more toned and tight appearance. The tissue is re-positioned in the buttock region to improved shape and create a long-lasting lifted appearance.

Liposuction is performed at the same time or before the buttock lift procedure for optimal contouring purposes.

No amount of exercise or weight lifting program will result in an improved appearance of the buttock skin redundancy, but typically weight loss will procedure more excess skin. For previous tummy tuck patients, this incision would be extended along the lower back to perform a buttock lift. At the Gillian Institute, we take great care to deliver the best results and as part of that, use a specialized suture technique where the top layer of skin is folded inward. This method results in a well-hidden scar and more natural results.

The recovery period is two weeks. Positioning after surgery recommends maintaining a straight, non-flexed position to the lower back or hyperextension of the lower back to reduce tension to the incision. The patient is required to limit lifting to less than 10 lbs for the first two weeks, and no twisting, turning or bending for the first 2-3 weeks post operative. When patients return to desk jobs or computer jobs, a good posture must be maintained to ensure adequate healing of the incision. We will place a drain(s) to the buttock region for the first one week and will be removed in the office. Topifoam compression pads are placed under the compression garment for the first one week, and the compression garment is required for six weeks.

Alternative and Combination Techniques

In our extensive experience, the best, most natural results are achieved with a combination of methods. Using thoughtless, cookie-cutter strategies rarely turn out well. Rather, we tailor our procedures to match with your body and goals. For example, patients whose concerns are excessive sagging may benefit from an overall body lift that includes a butt lift as part of the treatment. Or in other cases, liposuction paired with body lift can result in more natural contouring and sculpting.

SCULPTRA AND BELLAFILL

Some especially athletic or naturally lean individuals may not have enough natural body fat to take advantage of the Brazilian Butt Lift or fat grafting butt lifts. In these cases, butt lifts can be achieved using Sculptra or Bellafill dermal injectionsDermal injections are proven effective in many other areas of cosmetics for their ability to volumize and reshape. Another benefit of the Sculptra and Bellafill butt lifts are that these are non-surgical techniques. Using dermal injections such as Sculptra also results in the stimulation of collagen production to rejuvenate tissue for a fuller appearance. The active ingredients in Sculptra and Bellafill are long-lasting. Sculptra injections last as long as two years where Bellafill may last as long as five.

Risks

Patients are required to stop smoking and use of all tobacco products a minimum of 6 months before surgery to decrease the risk of complications related to healing and decreased blood flow to the tissue and skin resulting in skin necrosis and incision separation. Smoking has been shown to decrease blood flow by 30% to the incision and tissue resulting in complications related to healing, which will significantly increase the recovery period.

We would also recommend you are within 15-20 lbs of your ideal body weight to optimize the final result and to decrease the risk of complications related to healing.

Procedure

For fat grafting to the buttocks, the buttock region looks more appealing, attractive, and lifted with adding more volume, creating an improved shape. It is not always an emphasis on increasing the “volume” of the buttock, but more importantly, where the fat grafts are placed, that determines the lift and reshaping results. The Gillian Institute performs liposuction the chosen donor site, typically the back, hips, thighs, and knees, to remove the desired amount of fatty tissue that will be used for the natural butt augmentation. The liposuction aspirate is treated using the “Coleman” technique in surgery. The liposuction aspirate is strained, and the fat grafts are placed in syringes for re-injection with special blunt injection cannula.

Dr. Short then uses a special layering technique to maximize survivability of the fat grafts and to avoid a significant overcorrection approach. We will place the fat grafts in the regions desired for optimal lift and reshaping by placing pearl-sized drops of the fat grafts in different layers of the muscle and fat to ensure an adequate amount of blood supply. Due to the relationship between the blood supply and survivability of the fat grafts, cessation of smoking is required a minimum of 3-6 months before surgery for optimal results. The layering method for buttock fat grafting will create a smooth, more rounded “Brazilian” buttock. By using your own fat cells, there is no chance for rejection. The incisions used for the fat grafting procedure are very small, 1.5-2.5 cm, are very well concealed to the buttock region.

Recovery

The recovery period is 2-3 weeks, and positioning after surgery requires no lying on the fat grafts for the first two weeks. We recommend positioning on your side or stomach for the first two weeks. Patients are required to limit lifting to less than 10 lbs for the first two weeks, and no twisting, turning or bending for the first 2-3 weeks postoperative. When patients return to desk jobs or computer jobs, a good posture with sitting off the graft sites is recommended. The doctor will place a drain(s) to the buttock region for the first 1-2 weeks and will be removed in the office. Topifoam compression pads are placed under the compression garment for the first two weeks, and the compression garment is required for six weeks.

Planning the Surgery:

TIME OFF WORK

2 weeks for recovery period with lifting and positioning restrictions for the first 2-3 weeks post operative.

CARETAKER

You must have a caretaker for the first 48-72 hours after surgery. You must have a driver for the first 1-2 weeks post operative.

THE DAY OF SURGERY

The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes 3.5 to 5 hours.

AFTER SURGERY

Light dressings are placed with skin glue adhesive and steri-strips to the incision for the first two weeks. A scar treatment will be recommended after two weeks. The Topifoam compression pads are placed for one week under the compression garment.

The Topifoam compression pads add additional padding under the garment to alleviate swelling sooner, decrease bruising, and aid in molding the skin for appropriate skin contraction the compression garment is required for six weeks post operative to reduce swelling.

Post-operative external ultrasound massage will begin one to two weeks following surgery to reduce any areas of firmness and swelling, encourage the lymphatic system, and promote skin contraction. The post-operative massage is performed in the office by a licensed aesthetician or nurse.

  • You will receive oral pain medication for the initial discomfort.
  • Once the tenderness and swelling subside, you may find Lycra or spandex garments more comfortable. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 6 weeks, and the final contour becomes apparent over three months.
  • In the weeks following the procedure, it is common to experience discomfort while sitting.

Anticipated Result

  • Tighter, toned appearance to the buttock regions, lower hips, and buttock creases
  • Resembling a hour glass figure.
  • An improvement in the appearance of the skin surface irregularities to the buttock
  • Permanent improvement with sagging buttock skin
  • A more lifted buttock appearance.
  • Fuller, more rounded and shapely buttock curvature.

Note: It is important to address any concerns with The Gillian Institute at the time of your consultation. There is some risk, as with any surgical procedure. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual. We can explain the procedure and potential complications to you in detail and can assist you in determining if a buttock lift is right for you.

Cost

The cost of a Brazilian Butt Lift is highly individualized, depending on the patient’s case and the amount of lift needed. During the initial consultation, Dr. Short will work with each patient to construct a personalized treatment plan which will help provide an accurate price quote for the procedure. Combining additional treatments with the Brazilian Butt Lift will also affect the cost.
