About Breast Implants

Breast implant surgery is highly customizable. Breast implants are a safe, FDA-approved way of adding natural-feeling volume to the breasts. Breast implant options include saline and silicone implants. We carry a range of implant sizes so that you can select your desired breast look and feel. Breast implants not only make a difference in breast appearance, they also add a more flattering curve to your overall body contours. Breast implants are a great option for mothers, women who wish for larger breasts, or simply anyone who wants to look better in a bathing suit!

Whether you want to achieve moderate, dramatic, or subtle improvements, breast implants will deliver the look you seek. Your implant placement depth and the type of incision used to place your breast implant will depend on your chosen implant and Dr. Short’s professional opinion. Dr. Short will make sure to go over all your surgical options with you during a private consultation at The Gillian Institute.

Benefits of Breast Implants

Women all around the world love their breast implants!

Why do so many women choose breast implants? Implants will:

  • Add natural-looking volume to the breasts
  • Make your breasts more symmetrical
  • Adjust your breasts to your desired shape
  • Improve your confidence
  • Make you look great in clothes and swimwear
  • Help you achieve your dream body
  • Last for the long-term

Are Breast Implants Right For Me?

Do you wish your breasts were fuller, rounder, or more even? If you have lost weight, had children, or were born with naturally smaller breasts, you are an excellent candidate for Breast Implants.

You are a good candidate for Breast Implant surgery if:

  • You are in overall good health
  • You are at a stable weight
  • You are a non-smoker
  • You have reasonable expectations of the outcomes possible with implants

Mothers should wait until a few months after breastfeeding to receive breast implants. Breast implants will address the shape and volume of the breast.

If you are interested in addressing breast ptosis and raising the position of the breasts, ask Dr. Short about combining breast implants with a breast lift. These two procedures are frequently combined, with beautiful results. Any woman over the age of 18 who is interested in augmenting her breasts is a good candidate for breast implants. If you have any questions about breast implants, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Implant Types

At The Gillian Institute, we offer three different breast implants. Patients have the option of:

SALINE IMPLANTS

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. One benefit to saline implants is that the silicone shell can be placed within the body empty and then filled with saline once correctly placed within the breast. This reduces the size of the surgical incision. The saline implant shell is designed with an inner structure that will create a round, full look in the entire breast circumference.

COHESIVE GEL IMPLANTS

These implants are filled with a thick silicone gel. Cohesive gel implants replicate the feeling of natural breast tissue. The cohesive design cuts back on the chances of silicone leaks, which is rare but possible with traditional silicone implants. The solid design of this implant guarantees your implant will maintain its shape and improves the longevity of your results.

MENTOR XTRA IMPLANTS

Mentor implants are made of a stable silicone that is firmer than traditional silicone, but they still feel soft and natural. Mentor Xtra can achieve a rounder breast shape than other cohesive implants. This implant design helps avoid breast rippling and enables Dr. Short to place the implant over the breast muscle. Sub-glandular implant placement will majorly reduce patient discomfort during recovery. Patients also have the option of smooth or textured implants. The Mentor Xtra is a smooth implant, which can help achieve the desired rounded breast shape.

SIZE & PROJECTION

We offer a full range of implant sizes, including small implants.

In order to help you select the implant that will achieve your desired goals, we offer a range of implant sizes and projections. Whether you are looking for a minor improvement or major results, we have the implant size for you. In terms of implant projection, patients have the option of a moderate profile, moderate profile plus, high profile, ultrahigh profile, moderate plus profile Xtra, and high profile extra. Implants with lower projection will take up more width within the breast, while implants with a higher projection will extend farther from the body but take up less lateral space within the breast.

The explanation below demonstrates the difference in these implant projections.

The correct implant projection will make a major difference in your breast shape and resulting cleavage.

Depending on your chest measurements and desired results, Dr. Short will recommend the implant size and projection that will achieve your goals.

Placement

Dr. Short will recommend the implant depth that is right for your body and implant type. Placement options include:

  • Subpectoral Placement under the muscle: This reduces the chance of any rippling.
  • Subfascial Implant placement under the fascia of the breast.
  • Dual Plane Implant placement partially under the muscle.

SUBGLANDULAR

The implant is placed above the muscle. This implant placement can reduce discomfort during recovery. Dr. Short will take measurements and use implant “sizers” during your consultation to help you find the right implant size and appearance for you!

Fat Transfer to Breast

Fat transfer is another popular way of improving the shape and look of the breasts. Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is performed using fat from your own body. The fat is extracted using liposuction, processed, and then carefully re-injected into the breast. Fat transfer can add up to one cup size of natural-feeling volume to the breast or it can be combined to improve the outcomes from breast implants.

Dr. Kimberly Short, MD, FACS will thoroughly discuss your breast implant options with you during a private consultation at The Gillian Institute. Dr. Short will also go over your medical history and current medication use to make sure breast implants are the right option for you.

She will listen to your goals for your appearance and answer any questions that you have about breast implants. Please disclose any concerns or any pre-existing conditions at this time.

Every breast augmentation at The Gillian Institute is highly individualized. Dr. Short will take measurements of your breast and chest cavity in order to determine what implant shape and type will achieve your desired results. She will work with you to create a breast implant surgery plan that meets your personal preferences and delivers ideal augmentation outcomes.

Procedure

Your Breast Augmentation will be performed within one to two hours. The details of your breast enlargement surgery will reflect the treatment plan that you and Dr. Short agreed upon during your private consultation. A board-certified anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia to guarantee you are absolutely comfortable during your procedure.

The type of incision used to perform your breast implant surgery will depend on your chosen implant and your existing breast tissue. Incision options include the inframammary incision, which will be made in the crease under the breast, the periareolar incision around the edge of the areola, or the transaxillary incision, which allow breast implant placement through the armpit. Dr. Short most frequently utilizes the inframammary crease because it has the lowest chance of implant contracture.

Once the appropriate incision has been made, Dr. Short will place the chosen implant within the breast. Saline implants will be placed at the desired depth of the breast unfilled. Once it is in place, the implant shell will be filled with sterile saline. Dr. Short will use the Keller Funnel to place silicone implants within the breast. This method guarantees that the silicone implant stays in a contained, sterile environment before it is placed in the body.

Dr. Short will assess the appearance of the breasts in a standing position before closing the incisions with steri-strips. If fat will be transferred to the breasts, Dr. Short will perform this step once the implants are in place. We will monitor you following your breast augmentation to make sure you are doing well. Once our medical staff gives you the okay, you will be released to begin your recovery at home. Due to the after-effects of the anesthesia, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home following your procedure.

Recovery

Patients who receive subpectoral implant placement will be able to return to a desk job within five to seven days and to a more labor-intensive job within seven to ten days. Women who receive subglandular implant placement can return to a less demanding job within three to five days and to more strenuous work within seven to ten days.

Every patient at The Gillian Institute will receive personalized recovery instructions to help them care for their incisions and control any post-procedure discomfort. If you have questions at any point of your recovery, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!
